Inclusive approach to wine business yields fruitful results
The Wine Enthusiast Companies started as a mail-order catalog in the home of Adam Strum and his wife Sybil in 1988. After not finding the appropriate wine accessories for their home, the couple decided to start a mail-order catalog dedicated to wine lovers that offered a wide variety of products that were generally only available to professionals.
Their goal was to make wine more approachable and less intimidating to everyone by providing the finest selection of accessories, storage solutions, glasses, and more. It also offers an extensive selection of exclusive products not found anywhere else.
The Wine Enthusiast Companies now address the wholesale, retail, and consumer direct markets as a multi-channel marketer and world-renowned destination for all things wine.

‘NetSuite Sommelier’ required to deliver unique online checkout experience
Wine Enthusiast Companies was migrating from a legacy on-premise ERP and a homegrown ecommerce solution to NetSuite’s fully-integrated cloud platform. In addition to its immense product catalog, the company desired a highly customized online checkout process featuring multiple shipping customizations, up-sell opportunities, and other add-on items designed to best serve its growing online customer base.
Wine Enthusiast Companies selected NetSuite’s top-tier ecommerce product, SuiteCommerce Advanced (SCA), for its robust capabilities, but the out-of-the-box options could not deliver the coveted functionalities.
An SCA implementation with extensive custom kit development and air-tight data architecture was required to guarantee the optimal checkout performance and seamless data flow between the NetSuite ERP, third-party WMS, and their other systems.
Only a NetSuite consultant with a master sommelier-level of NetSuite SCA experience would be capable of executing this complex implementation.

SuiteCentric selected to uncork NetSuite’s ecommerce capabilities
Wine Enthusiast Companies selected SuiteCentric because of the prowess and expertise exhibited during the discovery call. The SuiteCentric team demonstrated how SCA could be customized to handle the complexity of their shipping requirements and SKU proliferation. That sealed the deal, and the project started soon after.
Wine Enthusiast Companies had several other must-haves for this project. These included integrating SCA with its WMS system called Highjump and implementing an ecommerce site search and merchandising platform called SearchSpring. Luckily, these were common requests, and SuiteCentric was up for the challenge.
The shipping and SKU proliferation requirements were challenging because NetSuite’s native kits did not allow for itemization.
To circumvent this, SuiteCentric created customizations that made product SKUs “explode” on the Sales Order. With product SKUs exploded, it enabled the use of multiple shipping line items during checkout that separated the cost, shipping type, and shipment date for each product. This process then enabled the WMS to determine from which warehouse to ship the products.
As an example, an order that includes a wine cabinet and corkscrew will have different shipping options and distribution locations. Wine cabinets are generally less than load (LTL) shipments, and the corkscrew could be standard shipping through UPS.
Thanks to SuiteCentric, these details – along with other options like personalization or warranties – could appear within the same window for customers to complete their order. And the data would trigger the appropriate actions in the back-office to complete the shipment.
The go-live was incredibly smooth, and the Wine Enthusiast Companies ecommerce website was efficiently processing orders before the busy holiday season.
